How I Became Suddenly Single

How I Became Suddenly Single

Susan Marshall has a passion. A passion to see people, especially women, live comfortable and fulfilling lives in retirement. But Susan knows it takes work and planning to gain that level of comfort.

And she knows that because of a tragedy she suffered almost 25 years ago.

In 1998, Susan was happily married to her high school sweetheart, a former Air Force pilot, who was a commercial airlines pilot. One hot July day, her husband didn’t show up at a family gathering as planned. He had gone up in a private aircraft with a friend that day. She drove to the local airport and ultimately learned that her husband had died that afternoon when the plane crashed.

In an instant, Susan’s life changed. Suddenly, Susan was single (and a single parent to three toddlers).

Susan and her husband had life insurance. But not much.

Years later, her securities account at a larger brokerage firm suffered large market losses.

She became an insurance and investment advisor in 2007. Since that time, she has learned that investors should not ask, “what is the rate of return on that investment?” Rather, investors should focus on building a foundation, a base of investments that will provide them with tax-free income. This base of tax-efficient investments can protect the client’s portfolio from a multitude of market risks.

Additionally, Susan focuses on her clients’ need for long-term health care protection. Both her grandparents lived long lives. She recognizes that as we live longer, the need for long-term care will always be there.

Susan’s passion is to help her clients, especially “suddenly single” women like she was, have enough assets to stay fit, stay healthy and stay connected to friends.

Today, Susan helps business owners and families improve their retirement plans by creating strategies that focus on reducing taxes and providing financial security. This includes planning for long-term care.

Susan is also proud to specialize in helping women, and those who find themselves suddenly single (remember, 80% of women die single), to achieve financial independence. Through one-on-one conversations, unique insights, and a genuine love of teaching, she provides her clients with a tailored plan for their financial future.

Currently, she is an Investment Advisor Representative with Arete Wealth Advisors. She holds CLU® and ChFC® designations, along with a life and health insurance license, and a real estate broker’s licenseIf you’re a woman not sure of your financial future, give Susan a call at 949-309-9962 or email her at [email protected] to begin your journey to financial independence.
